Kindness-themed Crystals added to NYE Ball

More than a million people will gather in Times Square this weekend to watch the ball drop.  Each year, a new theme adds newly designed crystals to the ball.  This year’s design represents kindness.

Simon Moss is the Co-Founder of Global Citizen, this year’s charity partner for the event.  He says the theme of kindness is something everyone can get behind.

"Because it's not our world leaders that make the world a better place," he said.  "It's down to everyday citizens doing small things in their lives."

So I asked some visitors in Times Square what kindness means to them.  16-year-old Kate Strong is in town with her family from DC.  She says kindness is not being judgmental.

"Kindness?  Just talking to people, accepting people as they are.  Being able to go up to someone and ask their opinions on something and be open-minded."

Ewan Allman and Louise Foulger are college students from the United Kingdom.  Ewan is hesitant to define kindness, but Louise had a pretty clear idea of what it means to her.

"You can be more kind to me!" she told him.  They both laughed, and he replied, "we're in New York!"

But even though New Yorkers don’t have the best reputation for kindness, the ball drop will bring together people from all walks of life to ring in the New Year.
