Ireland's Warrior Sport Coming To Queens
The ancient sport of hurling is older than the Egyptian pyramids and is Ireland's national sport. The four best teams are Kilkenny, Wexford, Tipperary, and Limerick. They will compete against each other in the Hurling Classic, a friendly match at Citifield. This the first time a major match will be played in New York. Richie Hogan is Kilkenny's center forward. He said the sport has existed in New York for a hundred years and has more than fifty hurling clubs.
"The Irish have always been synonymous with this city in general. Some would say we almost built it. So, it's very exciting for us to be able to come over and play in an iconic stadium like Citifield," said Hogan.
Hogan described the sport as a mix between hockey, soccer, and American football. Hurling players don't receive monetary compensation from the sport, but say they do it for the love of the game. The New York Hurling Classic will start tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
