Illegal Bridge Trips Could Mean Jail Time
Over the past four months, there have been three trespassing incidents on the Brooklyn Bridge. In response, state officials have proposed a new bill that would increase penalties for trespassing on vital infrastructure.
A 23 year-old French tourist was caught trespassing on the bridge on Sunday- the most recent case in the past few months. State and local officials have had enough, saying that the perpetrators don't just endanger themselves, but everyone else around. New York State Senator Daniel Squadron announced the new bill on Tuesday.
"Trespassing at the Brooklyn Bridge... or any of our other critical infrastructure creates fear and ... creates a need for resources and must be treated as a more serious crime than simple trespassing," Squadron said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Squadron said this is true whether you are a real security risk or simply a daredevil pulling off a stunt.
Under the bill, it would be considered a Class A misdemeanor to visit off-limit areas on infrastructure that is considered so vital to the state that its disruption could put people's health, safety or welfare in danger. The penalty for a crime like this could mean jail time.
The city is currently pursuing jail time for the French tourist, who was charged with reckless endangerment on Monday.
