Grannies Head To Texas To Protest Federal Immigration Policies
A group of grannies are advocating for family to come before policy.
In response to the border separations, an organization of senior women have organized a caravan down to McAllen, Texas. Grannies Respond caravans from across the country will converge at McAllen where they plan to sing Spanish songs outside a detention center, volunteer and engage in peaceful protest.
Some of the elderly advocates were part of protest culture in the sixties, but others are new to advocacy. Kathy Mellon, a grandmother from Massachusetts, said she's never done something like this before and was moved to respond in a way that would get the attention of leaders in Washington D.C.
"[The Trump] administration pays attention to the optics," Mellon said. "So we're going to give them some."
The federal government has been working to reunite immigrant children their parents, but there’s reportedly hundreds of kids still separated.
The caravans will reach McAllen on Monday.
