Dear Mr. DeBlasio: What New Yorkers Want from the New Mayor

WFUV's Stephanie Colombini hit the streets of Lower Manhattan to ask New Yorkers what they want from the next administration.

I strolled the blocks around Union Square asking people to finish this sentence: "Dear Mr. DeBlasio..."

"Among the top priorities should always be public transportation."

That's retired teacher Millicent Brown.   More specifically, the Brooklyn resident wants to see cancelled bus routes restored.

J.P. Templeton of Harlem says after his own experiences getting stopped on the street, he's still frustrated with how the NYPD conducts searches.   He's asking the new mayor to make good on his promise to root out racial profiling.

"Just because I'm black and I'm walking down the street at night time, doesn't mean I'm 'doing something,' you know?"

Others I talked with stressed the need for more affordable housing and bike lanes, but Ray Schwartz from Lower Manhattan just had a simple play for the incoming mayor.

"Help!"

Former President Bill Clinton will swear in Bill DeBlasio as New York City's next mayor in a ceremony on the steps of City Hall tomorrow.  De Blasio's the first Democrat to lead the city in twenty years.
