Strings are essential to many musical instruments, but because of the metals used to make them, most can't be recycled.  One of the largest instrument string makers is trying to change that.

Each year over 1.5 million pounds of musical strings are sent to landfills- that's more than two and a half Statues of Liberty.  To help stop the waste, D'Addario strings has joined forces with the organization Terracycle.  They specialize in recycling items not taken by everyday handlers.  The first of it's kind program is called Playback.

"Most people would think that they have no other option but to just throw the strings away," said Lauren Taylor, Terracycle's Global PR Director, "but we can take them, and with D'Addario's interest and support, they can be recycled into something new."

Through the Playback program, musicians are able to recycle strings for discounts and rewards on D'Addario products.
