City Comptroller Proposes New NYC Citizenship Fund

With the Statue of Liberty in the background, City Comptroller Scott Stringer called on the city to create a fund designed to offset the application fee to become a US citizen.  Stringer says the application fee, which is currently $725 dollars, is prohibitively expensive for lower-income immigrants. The fund would only apply to those within 150% to 300% of the federal poverty limit. It's a public-private fund, which means the city would share some of the cost with donors.

"No family should have to choose between applying for citizenship and putting food on the table," said Stringer.

The comptroller says the new policy could help up to 35,000 immigrants in New York City trying to become citizens. The fund is expected to cost $20 million dollars.
