Christie Calls for Special Election to Replace Lautenberg
Christie to appoint person to fill Senate seat until October election.
Following the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Gov. Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he would let the people of New Jersey choose a replacement by way of a special election. Christie announced the election’s primary will be held on August 13 and the general election will be on October 16.
Christie will appoint a person to fill Lautenberg’s seat in the interim.
A special election will cost New Jersey millions of dollars. Christie said the cost "cannot be measured against the value of having an elected representative in the United States Senate when so many consequential issues are being debated and determined this year."
