Brooklyn Museum Highlights Sneakers in New Exhibit

The Brooklyn Museum has a new exhibit opening Friday, and it explores how everyday footwear became a cultural phenomenon.

The exhibit is called "The Rise Sneaker Culture." Over 170 pairs of rubbery shoes will be on display. Museum curator Lisa Small says some highlights include shoes dating back to the 1830's and an entire section devoted to the evolution of the Air Jordan.

Small says it's shoes like Jordans that have made sneaker culture more popular than ever.

"This is a form of footwear around which a whole kind of different lifestyles, obsessions, connoisseurs, and collectors have come into play," Small says.

Small say the exhibition's an expanded version of an original display in Toronto. "The Rise of Sneaker Culture" runs until October 4th.
