Bronx Zoo Breaks World Record for Origami Display

It's not every day a zoo makes it into the Guinness World Records, but the Bronx Zoo did just that after showcasing the largest display of origami elephants. The Whipsnade Zoo in England held the previous record of more than 30,000 origami elphants. The Bronx Zoo more than doubled that number with a total of 78,564. The zoo received origami contributions from all 50 states and 40 different countries.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is using this achievement to raise awareness of the fact that 96 elephants are killed each day for their ivory. John Calvelli, the vice president of public affairs for WCS, says New York is one of the largest markets for ivory. Calvelli said he hopes campaigns like this one will change that.
