Bronx Street Renaming Celebrates Mexican Holiday

The corner of Jerome Avenue and East 193rd Street looks a bit different today, as it's been renamed "Cinco de Mayo Place." New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera says the street renaming is a celebration of Mexican culture in New York City. The nearby neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Fordham, and Bedford Park have some of the fastest growing Mexican populations in the city.

Diego Gomez, an ambassador from Mexico to New York City, says celebrating Mexican culture is important in the face of federal crackdowns on immigration.

"It is in that diversity, it is in that Hispanic, Latino, and Mexican community that the United States has one of its greatest strengths," Gomez said.

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence.
