Bronx Connections: Coronavirus Coverage

NPR affiliate station WFUV is pleased to continue teaming up with BronxNet to provide news and information critical to Bronxites through our collaboration, called Bronx Connections. This is another moment in our nation's history that demonstrates the importance of independent, fact-based local journalism to keep people informed, hold government accountable and tell the stories of communities who need their voices heard. WFUV is honored to be contributing to BronxNet to keep the Bronx abreast of latest developments, as well as enlightened and entertained.

Mark Solasz, Vice President and Director of Sales at Master Purveyors in The Hunts Point Cooperative Market, joins WFUV Correspondent Natalie Migliore for BronxNet for a discussion on the impact COVID-19 has had on their business and the food industry, and why this has had an even greater impact than events in history such as 9/11.

As COVID-19 has put New York on pause, many families in The Bronx and beyond have had to adjust their budgets. Catherine Clarke, Deputy Director of Development and Administration and Jumelia Abrahamson, Director of the the Northwest Bronx Resource Center for University Neighborhood Housing Program, join WFUV's Natalie Migliore for BronxNet for a discussion on their remote financial services, money managing during this time and more.

The human service organization BronxWorks has been helping individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being for decades now. It’s seen residents in the borough through some pretty challenging times, including the dark days of the 1970s and 80s, when parts of the Bronx were literally burning. BronxWorks is now helping everyone from toddlers to seniors get through the unprecedented challenge of the coronavirus pandemic. George Bodarky, News Director of NPR affiliate station WFUV, talks with BronxWorks Executive Director Eilieen Torres for BronxNet, about how the human service organization is responding to the COVID-19 crisis.

Elected officials have agreed to extend social distancing guidelines through the end of April due to the coronavirus pandemic. But what does that mean for survivors of domestic violence who are spending more time at home with their perpetrators? Maureen Curtis is the Vice President of Criminal Justice Programs at Safe Horizon. She talks with WFUV's Natalie Migliore for BronxNet about how those experiencing domestic violence can navigate through these unexpected times.

In the midst of all the tragedy surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, there are more hopeful and inspiring moments. Dr. Sulejman Celaj, head of cardiology at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, talks with WFUV News Director George Bodarky about how COVID-19 reconnected him with an old friend from war-torn Kosovo.

Emergency Room staff at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx are enjoying hand-made meals – twice a day – thanks to Lunch for Life -- a fundraising initiative launched by Fordham Preparatory School. The meals are prepared by Mike’s Deli located in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, also in the Bronx. News Director of NPR affiliate station, WFUV, George Bodarky talks with Fordham Prep President Fr. Christopher Devron, S.J. about the effort.

WFUV News Director George Bodarky talks with 17-year-old Sam O'Hara for BronxNet, who is using 3-D printing to make face shields for doctors and nurses fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, including medical staff at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. Sam is a senior at the Birch Wathen Lenox School in Manhattan. St. Barnabas became a beneficiary of Sam’s project because his parents are long-time friends of Dr. Janine Adjo, chair of the St. Barnabas Department of Pediatrics. Coincidentally, Sam's pediatrician mother, Dr. Mandy O’Hara, began her career at St. Barnabas before the two doctors ever met.

What if we could stomp out hunger one slice of pizza at a time? Or what if we could help feed our hardworking healthcare community in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic? Enter the nonprofit organization Slice Out Hunger. WFUV's News Director George Bodarky talked with founder Scott Wiener as part of our Bronx Connections collaboration.
