William Bell, Dennis Elsas and John Leventhal at WFUV

William Bell might not be a familiar name to most listeners, but it's likely his most famous song is. Co-written with Booker T. Jones, "Born Under a Bad Sign" was originally recorded by Albert King in 1967 and then successfully covered and introduced to a whole new audience by the British band Cream.

Bell has never stopped writing, but with his new album, This Is Where I Live, he's back to recording and touring. Collaborating with the highly respected producer John Leventhal, Bell has brought us a terrific new collection of songs that showcases his honest, soulful sound with a fresh yet retro feel that goes down easy.

Bell is back on the legendary Stax record label and when he and Leventhal visited FUV, we talked about what it was like to be in the midst of that magical Memphis studio where so much great music history was made in the Sixties. The two friends also discussed what went into choosing the diverse assortment of old and new songs that make up This Is Where I Live and treated us to a great live performance too.
