Richard Thompson - Words and Music - 2013
Richard Thompson is a triple threat. He’s a brilliant songwriter, an outstanding guitarist (and one of the most underrated) and a great singer. All three of those skills were very apparent when Richard made his return visit to WFUV recently. Richard has a brand new album out called Electric, which was produced by Buddy Miller and recorded in Nashville in Buddy’s home recording studio.
It is totally accurate to refer to Richard Thompson as a music legend. He was an original member of Fairport Convention, playing guitar and singing in the band while developing his songwriting abilities. He can be heard on their first five albums, released between 1967 until 1971. Upon his departure from Fairport Convention, Richard would release his first solo album in 1972 and that same year, would marry singer and songwriter Linda Peters. A duo was born! Richard and Linda Thompson would go on to release six albums together from 1974 until 1982. Unfortunately in 1982, it all came to an end. Following their separation, both as a couple and recording entity, Richard returned to his solo career in 1983. Fast forward thirty years and we find Richard sounding better than ever on the new album, Electric.
