The young Massachusetts singer-songwriter Alice Howe caught the attention of music lovers at folk conferences in 2016. One of them was Freebo, veteran bassist and sideman (a decade with Bonnie Raitt, among others). They began a collaboration which brought Alice's resonant songs and vocals together with Freebo's musical experience and production expertise.

In 2022, at Freebo's suggestion, they traveled from California, where they both live, to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to record her third album with session musicians at the legendary FAME Studios. The result was Circumstance, which moves beyond folk to capture something deeper and funkier.

Alice and Freebo returned to WFUV for a performance and conversation that touched on the ghosts of Aretha Franklin and others vibrating at FAME Studios, Bonnie Raitt's influence, and Alice's growth as a songwriter.
