Rams Offense Sputters Against Jaspers in Battle of the Bronx
After opening up the season at 1-4 on the road, the Rams were eager to give a packed Rose Hill Gym a win in their first home game. Instead, they suffer a tough loss to the Manhattan Jaspers in a game they led in the middle of the second half.
Fordham was carried by a career night for sophomore forward Ryan Canty who led the team with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 rejections off the bench. Junior guard Branden Frazier chipped in with 16, with 9 of those coming from the charity stripe in 10 atttempts. Despite these performances, Fordham was unable to sustain its offensive rhythm, only shoting 36.4% on the night. Manhattan did not fare much better, connecting at a 45% clip.
Canty kept the Rams close in the first half, scoring 8 of his 16 points, including a couple of putback slams. With both clubs struggling on offense, Manhattan only led 26-23 at the half.
Fordham turned up the defense in the second half, holding Manhattan scoreless for an 8 minute stretch from the 15 minute mark. The Rams took the lead at 13:25 on free-throw from sophomore guard Bryan Smith caused by his theft of Manhattans's Ryan McCoy. The Rams D in conjuction with the Jaspers' rough ball handling, forced Manhattan into 27 total turnovers.
Junior guard Mike Alvarado was the key player for the Manhattan Jaspers, leading them with 19 points off the bench. Fordham had difficulty preventing him from slashing into the paint late in the game. Fordham led by 4 with 8 minnutes to play, but Alvarado's jumper at 4:52 brought the Jaspers to within a point, 52-51. They would take the lead and Fordham would trail by 4 with 1:56 left to play, but the Rams could not muster anymore offensive. The Jaspers hit their free-throws late and improved to 2-3, while the Rams fell to 1-5.
