Rams lose on the Rhode
In a do or die game for the Rams on Wednesday night, Fordham failed to live up to the same motto that caps off its fight song, falling to URI 78-58 on the road. The loss ended the maroon and white's hopes at its first Atlantic 10 tournament berth in four seasons.
Senior guard Anthony Malhoit led to way for the "other Rams" on their senior night, netting a game-high 21 on 8-11 shooting, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. Malhoit, whose career high in points before this game was only seven, also pulled down nine boards.
Fellow senior Orion Outerbridge also put forth an impressive performance in his last game in the Ryan Center, pouring in 15 points and grabbing 13 boards.
Fordham shot themselves in the foot with a poor effort from field yet again, converting on just 32 percent of their field goal attempts and only 17 percent of their tries from downtown.
Coming into tonight, Fordham needed wins in their final two contests and a pair of losses from GW to advance to the conference tournament for the first time since 2007-2008. Even with a loss to La Salle this evening, GW clinched the twelfth and final spot in the tournament with the Fordham loss.
Sophomore guard Branden Frazier led the way for the Rams with 20 points in the losing effort. Fatty McMillan was the only other Fordham Ram in double figures with ten.
The Rams close out their 2011-2012 campaign this Saturday when they host the 23rd ranked Temple Owls in the Rose Hill Gym on senior day. Kyle Kesses and I will be bringing you the call starting at 3:50 on 90.7 FM and wfuv.org.
