New York Drivers Could Face Fines from Cameras for Breaking Speed Limit.
New York City and Long Island will soon get more than 200 new speed cameras to combat dangerous driving in school zones.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Wednesday that authorizes up to 125 cameras on Long Island and another 120 in New York City.
The cameras will be installed in school zones and will operate during and immediately before and after school activities. Speeders caught by the devices would be mailed a $50 ticket.
Lawmakers voted earlier this year to authorize the cameras, which will raise millions of dollars for local governments.
In New York City, the automated devices are part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's campaign to reduce traffic fatalities.
