Ten Buyback Events Later This Year

New York City will launch a citywide gun buyback program later this year aimed at removing thousands of illegal guns off the street.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn made the announcement Sunday. The Council and the NYPD each will contribute $150,000 for 10 gun buyback events.

Individuals can surrender handguns with no questions asked.

The program will offer $200 for handguns and assault rifles and a $20 for rifles and shotguns.

The Council and NYPD will determine the location of the buybacks based on things like shooting incidents, homicides, firearm arrests and gun trafficking patterns.

They will partner with houses of worship to host the weapon drop-offs.
