NYC Public Schools to Honor Muslim Holidays

Beginning next year Eid-al-fitr and Eid-al-adha will be days off for the city's public schools.
New York City's public schools taking steps to become more inclusive. They are set to include two Muslim holidays in their official calendars.

Beginning next year, Muslim holy days Eid-al-fitr and Eid-al-adha will be days off for the city's public schools.

Mayor De Blasio said the city is the largest school district in the nation to adopt Muslim holidays as school holidays.

He said the nearly 100,000 Muslim students will no longer have to choose between faith and education.

"That is a kind of choice that was wrong to have to make for these families. It was wrong that our school system left them in that situation," he said.

De Blasio said students will still go to school for the state mandated 180 days and the calendar will be adjusted yearly to accommodate for these holidays like it is for Christian and Jewish holidays.
