NYC on Track to Reach Affordable Housing Goal, Says Mayor
New York City's taken an important first step to reach its affordable housing goal.
Mayor De Blasio's announced the city financed the creation and preservation of more than 17,300 affordable housing units last year.
De Blasio says that's over 1,000 more units than city had originally projected to develop.
"It is an extraordinary start on an extraordinary program," he said. "It gives us great confidence about our ability to keep hitting the numbers year in and year out."
De Blasio says says last year's developments will house nearly 42,000 New Yorkers. He says despite rising costs, New York has to be "a city for all."
"People who need affordable housing are being given a chance to stay in the building they love, to stay in the neighborhood they love, to continue living in the part of the borough the love; to know this city is still a place for them," he said.
De Blasio says 2014's developments are part of his larger goal to save or create 200,000 affordable housing units over the next decade.
