NYC Department of Education Takes a Stand Against Transgender Discrimination

The DOE announces a new set of guidelines that aim to protect transgender students in the classroom.

The New York City Department of Education is taking a stand for the rights of transgender students.

A new set of guidelines looks to protect transgender students from discrimination in the classroom. The guidelines include things like allowing students to dress according to their gender identity. Michael Silverman heads the Transgender Legal Defense and Edcuation Fund. He says these guidelines are a big step in the right direction.

"Often transgender students are told you can't, for example, participate on the sports teams because you're not really a boy or you're not really a girl. These guidelines take a firm stand against that kind of exclusion."

The new policy also reccomends that students should be addressed by the name and pronoun that matches their gender identity.
