New Music Monday Has Some From Both the Rookies and the Veterans

by John Stein

New Music Monday is a collection of the best new releases in music each week. We share them with you every Monday, every hour on WFUV.

Shovels and Rope – O’ Be Joyful

Charleston, South Carolina duo Shovels and Rope produce energetic folk rock. The band has toured with the likes of Justin Townes Earle and The Felice Brothers. This album shows that the band has paid their dues and found something of their own.

Cory Branan – Mutt

After a six year wait Cory Branan releases his third album, Mutt, and his first with Chicago label Bloodshot Records. The genre-bending storyteller simultaneously reminds one of John Prine and Tom Waits on this aptly named recording.

Mary Chapin Carpenter – “Soul Companion”

This duet with James Taylor is the first single off the Carpenter's forthcoming album, Ashes and Roses. This pretty song highlights the skills of both of these acclaimed artists.

Chris Smither – Hundred Dollar Valentine

Folk and blues veteran Chris Smither comes back with his 12th studio album. Once again Smither releases a sparse but beautiful album, right in the sonic realm he feels most comfortable.
