Two wins in a row put New York 3 games out of first

The surging Liberty have won two straight and stand at 2-5, just three games out of first in the Eastern Conference. They handed the Indiana Fever their first loss on Saturday 87-82, and followed that up with a 79-74 win over 2010 and 2011 WNBA Finalists, the Atlanta Dream. Kia Vaughn has took it upon herself to solve the Liberty’s problem inside, hitting jump-shot after jump-shot and scoring with ease around the basket.

New York was throwing passes away on offense and blowing assignments on defense through the first five games, but have come together as a team to produce results of late. Leilani Mitchell and Cappie Pondexter are timing bounce passes perfectly inside to cutting big-men, which has allowed them to score in transition. Aside from the fastbreak points, Leilani Mitchell has found her stroke from the outside, hitting 4 of 5 from downtown last night.

Aside from the offense surging, so has the defense. It’s not only been the guards forcing turnovers, but also the bigs inside rejecting shots and stealing the ball. A team that struggled to keep energy for all four quarters now picks up the pace as the game goes on, and has no trouble with a heavy schedule – playing 3 games in 4 days to the result of 2 wins.

The Liberty get a day off today, and will travel to Washington to take on the Mystics on Friday. They return home on Sunday to face the Chicago Sky.
