Upstate Watertown, NY, Takes Festive Aim at Nuisance Crow...

The northern New York city is trying to chase thousands of crows out of town with fireworks.

Wildlife biologists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture set off fireworks in Watertown Monday night, the start of a three-day program aimed at ridding the city of the estimated 10,000 to 15,000 crows that roost each night in the city, without resorting to violence.

the crew also used lasers and amplified recordings of crow distress calls to harass the birds.

Large flocks of crows have caused nuisances in other upstate cities in recent years, including Auburn, Syracuse and Utica. The Mohawk Valley city of Amsterdam is also wrestling with the problem.

Auburn's problem spawned a controversial annual crow shooting contest that drew hunters from across the United States.
