Amidst the dog days of August and the first half of football training camp at Rose Hill, Fordham Football Head Coach Andrew Breiner threw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium prior to Monday night's Yankees-Blue Jays matchup. (Watch the video here and here the introduction from Yankees Public Address Announcer Paul Olden below:)
Practicing prior to arriving at River and 161st Street, Breiner took the mound with Holy Cross Director of Athletics David Pine to promote the 31st Ram-Crusader Cup to be played at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.
"It feels good now that it's over," the first year head coach said after the pitch. "I didn't bounce it."
Although the pitch was up and in and out of the strike zone, perhaps Breiner inspired the night's pitchers as the two starters -- Chad Green for the Yankees and R.A. Dickey for the Blue Jays -- combined to pitch 11 innings, allowing one run on just six hits, while striking out 17.
Breiner was joined by his wife, Kelly, and Fordham's Director of Athletics, David Roach, among others on the field prior to the game. The entire Rams football squad was also in attendance with the group nearly occupying an entire section in the left centerfield bleachers.
The team, picked to finish second in the Patriot League, could be heard throughout the bleachers during the AL East showdown and their spirited cheers appeared to pay off for the home team. Seconds after a loud exclamation, Yankees rookie outfielder Aaron Judge ripped an RBI double into the right field alley. It was the only run scored on Monday night as the Bronx Bombers won 1-0 in the first of three games with Toronto.
Although the team left early to prepare for Tuesday's camp schedule, the night marked another step towards the 2016 season and the 2016 Ram-Crusader Cup. Tickets to the historic game are currently on sale through the Fordham Ticket Office.
