AARP: New York Needs an Advocate for Utility Customers
The New York chapter of AARP says high residential electricity rates in the state point to the need for an independent utility consumer advocate.
AARP supports a bill before the Legislature that would establish a consumer advocate's office to represent residential consumers when utilities propose rate hikes.
The group says 40 states already have independent advocates that save consumers money.
AARP says New York has the second highest electric rates in the nation after Hawaii.
