Baseball is romantic and it is cruel. The Yankees have four games left to play but their season is now effectively over and the playoffs are out of reach. The sun has set on two pillars of Yankee folklore and the impressive charade of a mostly bench player roster has finally worn down and come to grips with a reality many thought earlier this year was destiny.

Everyone knew it was coming.

After the one year contract, the struggling outings, the aging body, it was clear that this season was going to be the last that Yankee legend Andy Pettitte would don the Pinstripes.  That didn’t make his retirement announcement on Friday afternoon any easier to hear.

Marty Glickman spent 12 years at WFUV teaching the student broadcasters the art of doing play-by-play.  He began with Bob Papa and his final pupil was Spero Dedes. Spero gives his recollection of Marty including what he meant to him and his feelings upon seeing the new HBO Documentary "Glickman". You can also hear Bob and Spero talk with Andrew Bogusch and Rich McLaughlin, also students of Marty, in special One on One interviews this past Saturday.
