Remembering a Legendary Broadcaster

by Bob Ahrens

WFUV Sports

Marty Glickman spent 12 years at WFUV teaching the student broadcasters the art of doing play-by-play.  He began with Bob Papa and his final pupil was Spero Dedes. Spero gives his recollection of Marty including what he meant to him and his feelings upon seeing the new HBO Documentary "Glickman". You can also hear Bob and Spero talk with Andrew Bogusch and Rich McLaughlin, also students of Marty, in special One on One interviews this past Saturday.

On August 26 at 9 PM HBO premiered "Glickman" a documentary by James Freedman about the life of broadcaster Marty Glickman. Marty was special to all of us here at WFUV, especially the students he taught in a 12-year period between 1988-2000.

Spero Dedes. Marty's final Fordham pupil, and current student DJ Sixsmith talk with Producer/Director James Freedman about his association with Marty, which began as a 17-year old high school student, They talk about the reason for making the documentary and what it was like to put the film together.

HBO's "Glickman"

In the latest HBO documentary, Glickman, about revered sportscaster Marty Glickman premiering tonight at 9pm, director James Freedman seems intent on paying homage to his subject’s humanity just as much as his legendary resume of work. The first athlete turned play-by-play commentator, Glickman, who passed away in 2001, became a pioneer for sportscasters, calling everything from basketball and football at the professional level to the trotters at Yonkers raceway and inspiring listeners and future broadcasters, notably many who came through the halls at WFUV.

A Giant Start

RB Michael Cox (#29) returns a kick during Giants practice Saturday

Brandon Mosley, Michael Cox, and Ryan Nassib aren’t exactly household names in New York, but they’d like to be one day.

The three Giants met the media Thursday as they held their final practice in New Jersey before beginning the preseason Saturday at Pittsburgh, and none are more excited to play than Mosley.

Pugh! Giants Take a Safe Pick and Deep Breath in the First Round

As the saying goes, Bigger is better. That seemed to be a theme at the 2013 NFL Draft Thursday night as nine of the thirty-two picks were offensive linemen, one of whom is on his way to East Rutherford to play for Big Blue. The Giants selected Syracuse left tackle Justin Pugh with the 19th overall pick in the draft, which was a surprise to many (cough cough, myself) who thought the Giants would take their chances on one of the athletic pass rushers who were available at number 19 (cough cough , again, myself) or Xavier Rhodes, the talented Florida State cornerback. But as General Manager Jerry Reese alluded to in his presser, for as long as the Giants have been around, and it has been awhile, they have always picked the best player available. Justin Pugh fits the bill.
