A-10 Quarterfinals: From Buzzer Beaters to Dominance

by Kelly Kultys

Kelly Kultys :: WFUV Sports

I’ve been to some crazy sporting events in my life. I’ve seen the Jets clinch a playoff berth at home against Cincinnati on what was probably the coldest day of the year. I witnessed Palice Malice take home the 145th running of the Belmont Stakes. I’ve seen the Rangers win in overtime and I’ve seen the Yankees pull off an impressive ninth inning comeback. But I don’t think anything was as crazy as watching Saint Bonaventure’s Jordan Gathers nail a three as time expired to send his team to the semifinals of the A-10 tournament.

Fordham Falls to Dayton, 87-74, Eliminated from A-10 Tournament

by Anthony Pucik

WFUV Sports

After a thrilling game yesterday against George Mason in the Atlantic-10 Tournament play-in game, Fordham was unable to pull out a victory against Dayton in the next round of the tournament, losing 87-74.

Dayton was up 50-31 at the end of the first half, but a 12-5 run by Fordham to start the second half brought them closer. The Rams would cut the Flyers' lead to as little as five, but would see Dayton start to pull away, a team that shot 58.8 percent from the floor on the afternoon.

The Fordham Rams had lost eight games in row coming into tonight’s opening round in the Atlantic 10 tournament. One more loss would be the end of the season. Thanks to four players scoring in double figures and a career high 19 rebounds by Ryan Canty, Fordham lives on to play another game. The Rams prevailed 70-67 tonight over George Mason.

We also discussed the Atlantic 10 women's basketball tournament where the Rams defeated Duquense on Friday night and played in the semifinal round on Saturdayagainst St. Bonaventure.

Jim O’Connell joined Anthony Pucik and me as One on One got ready for college basketball in March.  O’Connell told us which conference he thinks is the toughest and how far Wichita State will go in this year’s national tournament.  He also told us how he has not lost all confidence in Syracuse despite their recent slide and he gave us his pick for who might be a dark horse to bust some brackets this year (here’s a hint: Fordham has played them!).

Rhody Pulls Away From Fordham, 77-65

by Julian Atienza

Fordham began the game with the same defensive intensity that they showed in the second half of their close loss to LaSalle on Saturday.  They went shot for shot with URI down the stretch of first half and went into halftime with a 2-point lead. But, URI went on a run around the ten minute mark of the second half that Fordham couldn't quite answer.
