Dayton's early second half surge too much to overcome
A scorching start would not be enough to power Fordham (7-9, 0-3 A10) by Dayton (13-4, 1-1 A10) at the Rose Hill Gym, as the Flyers came away with an 80-68 victory.
Ryan Rhoomes played big early, and the Rams managed to get the Flyers in foul trouble in the opening half. Rhoomes pulled in a career high 15 caroms, while scoring 15 points in his third double-double of the year. Rhoomes and fellow big man Travion Leonard finished 8/8 from the field, while the rest of the team shot 11/47, including just 4/18 from beyond the arc.
The Rams flew out to their largest lead in the game's first four minutes, building a nine point lead through a pair of Frazier free throws, a Bryan Smith three, a Jermaine Myers lay in on the break and six points from Rhoomes. Fordham held a seven point advantage with 8:07 to go in the first frame after a pair of Rhoomes free throws. The Flyers would whittle the lead down before gaining a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game with 4:45 left in the half.
Khari Price and Devin Oliver had explosive games for the Flyers and seemed to be at their best with the shot clock winding down. The duo scored several deflating baskets with less than five seconds left to shoot. Price scored all fifteen of his points in the second half. Oliver and Vee Sanford paced scoring for Dayton with 16 points each.
