Colgate escaped from Rose Hill with a two point win and ran to a PL Title in 2012
This is the sixth of seven articles that preview the 2013 Patriot League teams. They are in the inverse order of the preseason poll voting by Patriot League football head coaches and sports information directors, who did not include their own school in the selections.
Fordham was not included in the poll because it will not be able to compete for the Patriot League championship and NCAA automatic bid in 2013, and its games against League members will not count towards the final standings for either team.
They say coming first in the preseason poll doesn’t matter. As Colgate coach Dick Biddle put it, though, it’s not a bad thing when it’s indicative of the respect gained from last year’s Patriot League championship run. Colgate returns with a run and gun offense that was on full display in a shoot out on Fordham’s Jack Coffey Field last season. This year, it appears Coach Biddle will have to work his magic, as a heavily depleted offensive line and the loss of their top tier running back will prove to be difficult early season challenges.
When the season opens, the expectations of a repeat are thrust upon the shoulders of do it all quarterback Gavin McCarney. McCarney, named the league’s preseason offensive player of the year, is a dual threat quarterback with a deceptive running style and electric arm. It will be difficult to improve on the numbers and results he posted last year, but the Walter Payton Award watch lister will need to do so to lead Colgate on another championship run.
