Fordham Men's Basketball Falls to Texas State in Season Opener
Last season Fordham defeated Texas State in the Rose Hill Gymnasium behind a 35 point performance from forward Chirs Gaston. This year, the Texas State Bobcats flipped the script in their building and won 86-76 in the opener for both teams.
Gaston had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Rams, but it was not enough against the Texas frontcourt of Corey Stern, Matt Staff, and Joel Wright; who all scored in double figures.
Fordham came out with a lot of energy but got into early foul trouble allowing Texas to take an early 8 point lead. However, Fordham refused to rollover and a Gaston jumper tied the game at 24 with just over seven minutes left in the first half. Texas then went on a run of their own and led 41-34 going into halftime.
Coming out of the second half, Texas stretched their lead to 17 points but Fordham went on another run powered by a couple of 3's from Bryan Smith, who finished with 16, to bring the score to 65-60 with 6 minutes to play. However, the Rams would not be able to cut into the lead anymore. Texas took advantage of sloppy ball handling by the Rams, who turned the ball over on the ensuing two possesions and a total of 23 times. Joel Wright closed out the game with 19 points for the Bobcats and missed some key free throws near the end of the game, but the Rams were not able to take advantage.
