Previewing the Patriot League: Colgate

New coach, new era in Hamilton, Raiders visit Fordham in October

This is the third of seven articles that preview the 2014 Patriot League. They are in the inverse order of the preseason poll voting by Patriot League football head coaches and sports information directors, who did not include their own school in the selections. Fordham was included in the preseason poll for the first time since introducing scholarships in 2010.

2013 Record: 4-8 Overall, 3-2 Patriot League
2013 Meeting: Fordham 56, Colgate 19 (Hamilton, NY)
Head Coach: Dan Hunt (1st season, 0-0)

A new head coach and a 4-8 season riddled with injuries places Colgate football in its greatest state of flux in nearly two decades.  The retirement of Dick Biddle was surprising to some, but many around the league anticipated his decision to leave to pursue a life off the gridiron. The long-time Colgate head coach left long-time assistant Dan Hunt in charge of the program he shaped in a conference he long dominated.

The biggest loss for Colgate was one they felt strongly last season. Quarterback Gavin McCarney graduates after an injury plagued year for the 2013 preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year.  Their disastrous loss to Fordham in freezing conditions was surely one of the bitterest pills for the Colgate faithful. Despite the appearance of a poor season, the Raiders finished 3-2 in the league and, when healthy, were viewed as a top 25 team early in the year.

The Raiders bring back three all-Patriot League selections, featuring linebacker Kris Kent, defensive back Mike Armiento, and fullback Ed Pavalko. They also bring back a storied tradition of winning, one which keeps anybody from counting out the Raiders as legitimate contenders this season.

Hear interviews with defensive back Mike Armiento and coach Dan Hunt from Patriot League Media Day on July 31 below.
