A New York state lawmaker whose bill made it illegal to pose for photographs with lions and tigers at traveling animal shows is praising a decision by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to phase out elephant performances.
CUNY Professor Mariette Bates is head of a program about which you have probably never heard. It is called Disabilities Studies.
"Traditionally Disabilities Studies is a critical look at those interactions between disability and society," explained Professor Bates.
That explanation sounds very theoretical, but there is a practical side too. Part of the goal is empowerment.
It's time for daylight saving again, but it's not the one we like. On Sunday, we're going to lose an hour, so don't forget to set your clock an hour ahead. The whole idea of daylight saving seems a little silly, and some in the past seem to have agreed. First adopted in the US for WWI, it was so unpopular that Congress it ended it right after. Same goes for its use in WWII. But in 1966, it was brought back with the Uniform Time Act. Now, the only states that don't observe DST are Arizona and Hawaii.
