For decades, Hunt's Point was known as the dumping site of the East Coast. But a number of South Bronx groups, New York City agencies and community activists are transforming the area into a relaxing recreation zone.
Environmental officials have installed air monitors in the Northeast Bronx to help fight asthma. New York state Senator Jeffrey Klein pushed for the program.
The school year is ending on a sour note for P.S. 73 in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, due to a theft of 100 laptop computers, but parents and community leaders are vowing to turn things around.
"The Melody" stands on land that was once owned by the City of New York and was developed under Mayor Bloomberg's New Housing Marketplace Plan. It's on a brownfield site and has initiatives to keep its residents healthy. There are indoor and outdoor fitness centers, a children's climbing and play area, and a slow moving elevator. It was purposely constructed that way to encouraged the use of the well-lit stairs. There are also motivational signs to encourage residents to exercise.
A new center for homeless families officially opened in the South Bronx Wednesday.
