The controversial opera “The Death of Klinghoffer” will open tonight at the Metropolitan Opera after months of protests and threats. The opera is about the 1985 hijacking of a passenger liner and some, including the daughters of deceased real-life subject Leon Klinghoffer—claim it’s anti-semitic. The Post reports that the NYPD—both in uniform and plainclothes—will have a heavy presence at Lincoln Center to keep things running smoothly.

Manhattan’s Lincoln Square neighborhood will be filled wall to wall with wintry well-wishers for tonight’s 14th Annual Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square.  The festival starts at 5:30 with a tree lighting on Broadway and 63rd and continues till 9 all the way up Broadway to 68th with food-tasting, live performances and music.

Lou Reed’s family and friends are hosting a gathering at the Lincoln Center Terrace from 1-4 today.  It’s open to the public and billed on his Facebook page as “no speeches. no live performances, just Lou's voice, guitar music & songs - playing the recordings selected by his family and friends.”
