Famed fashion designer Oscar de la Renta has passed away at 82 after a long battle with cancer. Much can and would be said about where he went with fashion, but it should also be noted where he came from. De la Renta was from the Dominican Republic, and was probably the most prominent Dominican-American in this country for years—foreshadowing the growing influence of the islanders in NYC.

This week's show includes an interview with the authors of Garden Guide: New York City and a visit to the Native Flora Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. And since, as they say, "April showers bring May flowers," we've produced a couple of segments on umbrellas, including the story of a Brooklyn woman who makes dresses, tote bags, and even doggie clothes out of broken, discarded umbrellas.
