Average temperature was warmest in 142 years.

With an average temperature of 40.9 degrees, last month went into the record books as the warmest February in Central Park since record keeping began in 1870.

That, combined with an unusually mild December and January, has equaled the second warmest winter on record.  Only the winter of 2001-02 saw higher average temperatures.

And New Yorkers aren't the only ones enjoying balmy weather.

Since January 1st, there have been more than 3800 record high temperatures set across the country.

The National Climatic Data Center says a polar jet stream that usually forces ice cold air into the United States has remained parked above central Canada this winter.
