Customers can track New York City buses using phones
People who ride Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses throughout New York City are now able to use their smartphones to find out when the next bus will arrive at their stop.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday that the initiative required installing GPS hardware and cellular data transmission equipment on 5,700 buses, which send their location to a central server every 30 seconds.
Customers can see the information by visiting www.mta.info/bustime on their smartphones or texting the specific bus stop code to 511123. The codes are already on signs at bus stops in Staten Island, the Bronx and Manhattan and are expected to be posted in Brooklyn and Queens starting this week.
Data collected by the buses will also be used to study how they operate their route.
