New Ice Rink Comes to North Brooklyn

North Brooklyn’s first and only outdoor ice skating rink will open for its inaugural season in Greenpoint on Friday.

The new rink was part of the city’s plans to reopen the McCarren Park Pool in 2012, as a use for the pool's deck space during winter months.

Some residents, like Amanda Fausten of East Williamsburg, are thrilled about the new destination in their area.

"I think it’s great,” said Fausten, “I mean the more fun things we can get in the neighborhood, it's great."

With the rink expected to become a winter destination for New Yorkers and tourists with concession stands, skate rentals, and a holiday market in the works, some Greenpoint residents like Soraya Odishoo are concerned this will attract larger crowds to disrupt their quiet neighborhood.

“Part of me was like, ‘Wow that's such a great idea,’” Odishoo said, "and then part of me was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s just another thing that's attracting massive groups of people.’”

McCarren Rink opens for the season Friday. It will be open seven days a week through January.
