New York Raises Tobacco Purchasing Age from 18 to 21

New legislation will go into effect in six months.

The young people of New York City will soon have to wait a little longer to get their tobacco fix.

The City Council, with the strong support of Mayor Bloomberg, approved legislation, 35-10, on Wednesday night that would increase the legal age for purchasing tobacco products — including: cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos — from 18 to 21.

The new law will go into effect in six months. It is the strictest smoking limit of any big American city.

"This is literally legislation that will save lives," Council Speaker Christine Quinn said soon before the legislation passed, according to The New York Times.
