Family members of gun violence victims joined Mayor Bloomberg at City Hall Monday calling for stricter background checks for gun buyers.

The Mayor said Washington needs to take a bolder stand on gun control, and stronger, “common sense” enforcement of laws already on the books.

Bloomberg said background checks are not as extensive as a 1968 gun law calls for them to be, and that loopholes should be closed to make sure the requirements in that law are met.

Thirty four people spoke at today’s event to represent the 34 people the mayor said are killed every day by guns.
