Morning Brief: January 8

The state of our union

Back in 1790, George Washington delivered the very first State of the Union Address today. Obama's not giving this year's speech until the 20th, but he's begun previewing it during a domestic trip across the country. He was in Detroit yesterday to talk about the recovery of the auto industry. Today, he's in Phoenix to announce a new execute order. And he's ending his trip in Knoxville to talk education. In the meantime, governors have begun giving their State of the State Addresses. Malloy gave his speech yesterday. Cuomo's giving his in two weeks after postponing it because of his father's death. And Chrisite's is on the 13th.

TODAY IN HISTORY

On this day in 1815, U.S. forces led by Andrew Jackson defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans. It was the last major engagement of the War of 1812, but since communication was slow, it was fought after the peaced treaty was signed.
