Straphanger's Campaign Names NYC's Slowest Bus

M79 gets dubious "Pokey" distinction from transit advocates

Every year a group of transportation advocates gives a prize to New York City's slowest bus service. This year, the so-called "Pokey" award went to Manhattan's crosstown M79 service, running between the Hudson and East rivers along 79th and 81st Streets.

Gene Russianoff is with the Straphanger's Campaign, one of the groups that determined the winner of the less-than-congratulatory award. He described a ride on the M79 as "excruciating."

"There are many things that go faster than the M79, like a running chicken, or a bumper car," Russianoff said.

"This year, we're comparing it to a lava flow in Hawaii," he added.

Russianoff said crosstown buses like the M79 are often the slowest in the system.
