Lawmakers Call for Continued 9/11 Medical Compensation

Millions of New Yorkers will pause this week to remember the tragic events of 9/11. But some people carry much more than memories.

A report from Mayor De Blasio's office says over 30,000 survivors and first responders have chronic illnesses or injuries from the attacks and subsequent toxin exposure.

A bill was passed in 2010 to ensure proper medical care for these people. But it expires in 2015. Many lawmakers, like State Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, don't think that's enough.

"If Congress does not continue to fulfill its undeniable moral obligation by reauthorizing these programs, they will close, and our government will have turned its back on these heroes," she said.

Gillibrand says she's optimistic the bill will be passed.
