Bronx Zoo to Host 6th Annual Run for the Wild

The Wildlife Conservation Society's hosting its 6th annual Run for the Wild this month. And this time around, funds are going to the 96 Elephants Campaign.

96 Elephants gets its name from the average number of elephants killed each day in Africa.

John Calvelli's with the Wildlife Conservation Society.  He and animal rights activists blame the illegal ivory tusk trade, which Calvelli says has escalated to a whole new level.

"They're going in indiscriminately, and killing a herd of elephants with helicopters, night vision goggles, and submachine guns.  That's bad enough!   They're now going in and putting cyanide into watering holes," he said.

Calvelli says the 96 Elephants campaign works to stop the killing, and to ban the sale of ivory worldwide.  And he says one of the largest illegal markets is right here in New York City.

The Run for the Wild's on April 26.
