Report calls for flood walls, water pumps and sea barriers

A New York commission formed to examine how to guard against future storms like Sandy has released a report calling for flood walls in subways, water pumps at airports and sea barriers along the coast among dozens of proposals.

The report was first obtained by The Associated Press and reported Tuesday. The findings of the commission formed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo were officially released Friday.

The report recommends short- and long-term protections in transportation and with building codes. It suggests improvements in insurance coverage, and suggests how to finance the improvements.

Some of the specific recommendations suggest using natural barriers to protect New York Harbor and Long Island. Others include roll-down gates and inflatable barriers to keep flood waters out of subways.
