Bloomberg Announces Staten Island Select Bus Service Route

New Select Bus Service line to open September 2nd on Staten Island

Mayor Bloomberg has announced the MTA’s new Select Bus Service for Staten Island Thursday.

The line will run along Hylan Boulevard connecting the Staten Island Mall and 86th Street subway station in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The new route for the S79 SBS launches this Sunday, September 2nd.

The mayor supports the MTA’s efforts. He said the Select Bus Service route will reduce travel times and improve service for the 9,000 daily riders.

Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan was also present. She agrees with the mayor explaining that the bus will no longer make 80 stops, reducing the travel time by fifteen minutes.

“By streamlining the number of stops to twenty-two, we’re bringing a red carpet to the borough’s busiest bus corridor,” Sadik-Khan said.

This addition marks the City’s fourth Select Bus Service. So far, the other three on Fordham Road in the Bronx, First and Second Avenues in Manhattan, and on 34th Street in Manhattan have reduced bus travel times by 20 percent, increasing ridership by 10 percent.

Improving bus service is part of Mayor Bloomberg’s long-term sustainability agenda, PlaNYC.

The announcement was made at the Yukon Avenue/Richmond Avenue S79 Select Bus Service stop.
