NYCLU Reacts to NYPD Monitoring Liberal Groups

Documents show the NYPD spied on political activists.

NYPD documents obtained by the Associated Press show the department spied on political activists and monitored their legal activities.

The newly uncovered documents show the department sent an undercover officer to the New Orleans People's Summit to take notes on organizers and activists.  The release comes after weeks of criticism of the NYPD's surveillance of Muslim communities.  Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union says the NYPD's practices threaten the core of our society.

"Political dissent is what makes our country great, its what makes our policies better, and its part of what holds our government accountable for its behavior."

The NYPD says their efforts are necessary to protect the city, and fall within the boundaries of the law.
